    Ubiquitous computing: Anytime, anyplace, anywhere?

    Computers are ubiquitous, in terms that they are everywhere, but does this mean the same as ubiquitous computing? Views are divided. The convergent device (one-does-all) view posits the computer as a tool through which anything, and indeed everything, can be done (Licklider & Taylor, 1968). The divergent device (many-do-all) view, by contrast, offers a world where microprocessors are embedded in everything and communicating with one another (Weiser, 1991). This debate is implicitly present in this issue, with examples of the convergent device in Crook & Barrowcliff's paper and in Gay et al's paper, and examples of the divergent devices in Thomas & Gellersen's paper and Baber's paper. I suspect both streams of technology are likely to co-exist

    Tribo-corrosion properties of cobalt-based medical implant alloys in simulated biological environments

    Tribological problems and corrosion degradation have been recognized as essential risks for total joint replacements, especially for all-metal arthroplasty. Few studies have focused on the interactions between tribology and corrosion (tribocorrosion) for implant materials. This paper addresses the importance of understanding tribocorrosion and the evaluation of such materials in simulated biological environments. Due to the complex effect of proteins on tribocorrosion, which has been demonstrated in previous studies, this study focuses towards understanding the effects of amino acids as aspects of material degradation. Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle’s Medium (DMEM) is a cell culture solution. It contains comparable amount and types of amino acids to normal synovial fluid in human joints. 0.36% NaCl solution was employed to isolate the biological species. Three materials were tested; High carbon (HC) CoCrMo (contains 0.19% carbon), low carbon (LC) CoCrMo (widely used materials for total joint replacement) and stainless steel UNS S31603 (316L). Integrated electrochemical tests supported by measurement of friction and near surface chemical analysis were carried out to enable their tribocorrosion behaviour to be fully characterized. As a general conclusion, amino acids were found to react with materials under tribological contacts and form complex organometallic/oxides which lubricate the metallic sample surface. Tribocorrosion plays a very important role in material degradation in the studied environments. HC CoCrMo shows superior wear, corrosion and tribocorrosion resistance – the material characteristics and their effect on the different tribocorrosion processes are discussed

    Case studies of mental models in home heat control: searching for feedback, valve, timer and switch theories

    An intergroup case study was undertaken to determine if: 1) There exist distinct mental models of home heating function, that differ significantly from the actual functioning of UK heating systems; and 2) Mental models of thermostat function can be categorized according to Kempton’s (1986) valve and feedback shared theories, and others from the literature. Distinct, inaccurate mental models of the heating system, as well as thermostat devices in isolation, were described. It was possible to categorise thermostat models by Kempton’s (1986) feedback shared theory, but other theories proved ambiguous. Alternate control devices could be categorized by Timer (Norman, 2002) and Switch (Peffer et al., 2011) theories. The need to consider the mental models of the heating system in terms of an integrated set of control devices, and to consider user’s goals and expectations of the system benefit, was highlighted. The value of discovering shared theories, and understanding user mental models, of home heating, are discussed with reference to their present day relevance for reducing energy consumption

    Impact of corrosion on fretting damage of electrical contacts

    Electrical contacts are used in a large number of industrial applications, this includes all sorts of modern transportation: airplanes, trains and automobiles. Mechanical assemblies are subjected to vibrations and micro-displacements between mating surfaces are observed leading to fretting wear. Mechanical degradation can additionally be accelerated by a corrosive factor caused by variable humidity, temperature and corrosive gas attack. Fretting-corrosion leads to an increase of contact resistance or intermittent contact resistance faults as corrosion products change the nature of the interface primary through a range of film formation processes. In this work the impact of a corrosion product film formed on copper and gold surfaces on the electrical contact fretting behavior is shown. It has been observed that modification of the interface by the formation of the surface layer can surprisingly lead to increase of the electrical contact durability

    Synovial joint lubrication – does nature teach more effective engineering lubrication strategies?

    Nature shows numerous examples of systems which show energy efficiency, elegance in their design and optimum use of materials. Biomimetics is an emerging field of research in engineering and successes have been documented in the diverse fields of robotics, mechanics, materials engineering and many more. To date little biomimetics research has been directed towards tribology in terms of transferring technologies from biological systems into engineering applications. The potential for biomimicry has been recognised in terms of replicating natural lubricants but this system reviews the potential for mimicking the synovial joint as an efficient and durable tribological system for potential engineering systems. The use of materials and the integration of materials technology and fluid/surface interactions are central to the discussion

    Measures of Per Capita Hours and their Implications for the Technology-Hours Debate

    Structural vector autoregressions give conflicting results on the effects of technology shocks on hours. The results depend crucially on the assumed data generating process for hours per capita. We show that the standard measure of hours per capita has significant low frequency movements that are the source of the conflicting results. HP filtered hours per capita produce results consistent with the those obtained when hours are assumed to have a unit root. We provide an alternative measure of hours per capita that adjusts for low frequency movements in government employment, schooling, and the aging of the population. When the new measure is used to determine the effect of technology shocks on hours using long-run restrictions, both the levels and the difference specifications give the same answer: hours decline in the short-run in response to a positive technology shock.

    A Century of Work and Leisure

    Has leisure increased over the last century? Standard measures of hours worked suggest that it has. In this paper, we develop a comprehensive measure of non-leisure hours that includes market work, home production, commuting and schooling for the last 105 years. We also present empirical and theoretical arguments for a definition of %u201Cper capita%u201D that encompasses the entire population. The new measures reveal a number of interesting 20th Century trends. First, 70 percent of the decline in hours worked has been offset by an increase in hours spent in school. Second, contrary to conventional wisdom, average hours spent in home production are actually slightly higher now than they were in the early part of the 20th Century. Finally, leisure per capita is approximately the same now as it was in 1900.
